I've worked enough events to put together this list of what I hope are helpful tips for when you start volunteering for public service events:
- If you don't know anything about the layout of the event or the area where you'll be serving, make sure to eat a very lite breakfast. For some of these events, a restroom is a far away dream.
- Stay hydrated no matter how far away a restroom is.
- Make sure you know the frequency you'll be using ahead of time. For most events you can get by with a 2-meter unit. However, I have been at events where they've used 440. You can try as much as you want, but you won't get a 2-meter radio to work for you in that situation. That's why I think a dual-band radio would be best for your first investment.
- If you sign up, show up. Many events are short on the desired number of operators. If someone doesn't show up (especially without contacting the organizer), this can, and does, cause needless stress for everybody. Showing up on-time (or early) is a wise idea, too. Assignments may change.
- Check in on your way in. If the event is using a repeater, check in and let the organizer know you're on the way. If circumstances have changed, this gives you the opportunity to find out ahead of time. Your assignment may have changed. In some cases, the event may even be cancelled. You wouldn't want to be the only one to show up would ya?
- If your post is in the middle of nowhere (and for some of the bicycle events, you will be there), make sure to take some snacks just in case the lunch wagon misses your stop.
- If you're using a HT, make sure you charge it up the night before. If you have one, bring along a backup battery (also fully charged). This should be basic stuff, but even experienced operators forget.
